The Masters' Tournament
The Masters Tournament commonly called The Masters, or the U.S. Masters is one of the four major championships for professional golf. The championship has been scheduled to be held during the first week of April. It is basically the first major of the year. Unlike any other event, the Masters is always held at the same place, the Augusta National Golf Club. This club is a private course in the southeastern United States. It is located in the Augusta city, Georgia.
The Masters had been started by an amateur champion player Bobby Jones along with the investment banker Clifford Roberts. For the First time, the Masters were played 86 years ago in the year 1934. This tournament is also the official money event on the PGA Tour, the European Tour, and the Japan Golf Tour.
The tournament also has a few traditions. Since the year 1949, a green jacket is given to the champion, who needs to return it back to the clubhouse about a year after his wins it. However, this jacket still remains his personal property and will be stored with the other champions' jackets in a special cloakroom. A golfer who has won the event many times will be using the same green jacket that had been given to him after his first win.
The Champions Dinner was inaugurated by Ben Hogan in the year 1952. This dinner takes place on Tuesday before each tournament takes place. Only those who have won the past champions, as well as certain board members of the Augusta National Golf Club, are present there.
Beginning in the year 1963, the legendary golfers most of them being the past champions. They included Fred McLeod, Jock Hutchinson, Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player. The Masters has been won by Nicklaus maximum times, Tiger Woods has five, Palmer has four. Jimmy Demaret, Sam Snead, Gary Player, Nick Faldo, and Phil Mickelson each have three.
The Augusta National course was opened in the year 1933 and ever since it has been modified multiple times by different architects. Some of the changes that have been made include the reshaping of the greens, the addition of the bunkers, extension of the water hazards, tee boxes have been built, planting of hundreds of trees and so much more.
