Six-time champion M C Mary Kom (51 kg) secured an unprecedented eighth medal at the Women's World Boxing Championship after advancing to the semi-finals.
She has surpassed herself as the most successful boxer in the history of the women's world championship by achieving this feat in Russia on Thursday.
The third seeded Indian boxer defeated her rival Valencia Victoria from Colombia and fetched a unanimous 5-0 verdict to make the last-four stage.
The 36-year-old boxed said after the bout, I am very happy to have secured a medal but I would be looking to make it better by reaching the finals She added It was a good bout for me and I will now try to improve on this performance in the semifinals. ``
In the semi-finals on Saturday, she will be up against the second seeded Turkish player Busenaz Cakiroglu, who was the Gold medalist in the European Championships and European Games. Cakiroglu defeated Cai Tsongo of China in her quarter-final match.
In a highly skillful performance, MaryKom waited for her chances and vigorously defended herself to ensure that Victoria's plan to impress judges by throwing in more punches didnt lead any fruitful results.
Her vast experience was highly useful when she brilliantly rotated her right arm to connect well placed hooks. Her straight punches were too good and powerful to break into Victoria's reasonably strong defenses.
With this feat, MaryKom improved her record as the most successful fighter in the tournament's history.
The Manipuri, in terms of the number of medals won, is, in fact, the number one across mens and womens competitions surpassing Cuban boxing Icon Felix Savon who has won seven medals.
In addition to six world titles, Mary Kom's stunning career is also studded with an Olympic bronze medal (2012), five Asian titles, gold medals at the Asian and Commonwealth Games, and many other major international finishes.In 2019, she has won gold medals at the India Open in Guwahati and the President's Cup in Indonesia.
