Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, said that India is among a group of countries interested in hosting the Olympics in 2036, 2040 and beyond.
The International Olympic Committee recently announced that Brisbane will host the 2032 Summer Games.
Even after the Australia, Brisbane was chosen last month to host the 2032 Summer Games, the IOC has a waiting list of suitors to host the Olympics in 2036, 2040 and even beyond, Bach said in a report. Ambitious host countries include Indonesia, India, Germany and Qatar.
"And this is just the ones which come to my mind". So, we really are in a very good position for the long term. Bach said according to the Wall Street Journal.
Bach's comments came at a time when the multi-million-dollar costs of hosting the Games have sparked controversy. The recently held Tokyo Games also faced an outcry over the amount of money spent to host the Olympics.
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Secretary General Rajiv Mehta has confirmed to PTI that they have already shown interest in hosting the showpiece event.
"In a meeting of the International Olympic Committee via video conference before Tokyo Olympics, the IOA expressed interest in hosting the Olympics in 2036 and beyond," Mehta said.
Delhi's Chief Deputy Minister Manish Sisodia said in March this year that they would do their best and develop the infrastructure for a successfully bid to host the 2048 Games, to celebrate 100 years of independence.
India has also shown interest in hosting the 2032 Olympics as part of a long-term hosting strategy that also includes the 2030 Asian Games and the 2026 Youth Olympics. Qatar and Riyadh awarded the Asian Games of 2030 and 2034 in December.
